Today was my last day at Stonebridge Country Club. As much as I liked working there, I felt like I didn’t really fit in. There were always groups that hung out together, and I wasn’t part of any of them. Sure, there were people that liked me, and were sad to see me go, but between the cliques, the politics, and the constant problems getting along with the sous-chef that replaced me, I just felt like it was time to move on. I am on good terms with the Chef though, so I am happy with that.
I will be taking a few days to sleep in and get some much deserved rest. I may also follow through with a lead I have here in town – the guy who runs the kitchen for Palmers Tavern and George’s Pizza is desperate for some help. He has no “mature” people working for him, so he ends up working just about every day because he doesn’t trust the teenagers to work unsupervised. I bring experience as well as age, and he is quite interested in bringing me in to help run the place. The food is pretty much the same as what I have been making at Stonebridge – a lot of fried food, hot sandwiches, etc. – but they also make pizza using sauce made from scratch. Granted, working for a place that makes pizza is a bit of a step backwards from working at a country club, but the food is the same, it’s closer to home, and I’d be given a position of responsibility (something I had at Stonebridge and had to give up due to inexperience.) Besides, something about working for a local tavern seems kinda cool, even if it’s only a temporary job until I can regroup and find something more permanent.
I’ve been told by more than one person to pursue hospitality gigs, such as assisted living, nursing homes, people with special dietary needs, etc. For one thing, the job is much slower paced – you always know ahead of time what you’re making, so there are no “OMG 20 people just walked in and we already shut off the oven!” moments.
