The time of my life...

Okay so it’s only day two, and all I have done is prep thus far. However, I am having an absolute blast with AM Grill. There have been a few hiccups here and there, such as running out of things because someone forgot about it, or being told that we desperately needed something only to find out that we had a ton of it in the walkin. Today we had a student go home sick right after breakfast prep, so we had to scramble to make up for that. The chef is really being cool about all this – it’s his first time running the Grill kitchen, so we’re all learning as we go. As long as it doesn’t affect the dishes going out to the customers, he’s okay with just about everything. He goes out of his way to tell people they are doing a good job too.

Here’s an example of the kinda guy the Chef is: today we have new students coming in for their first day orientations. We were done with service and cleanup, and ready to go home. The Chef pulled us aside and says he was going to come out and scream at us, to really scare the hell out of the new students. So we go out, talking amongst ourselves, and a few minutes later the Chef comes out, red in the face, screaming about “get your asses back in there, what are you all doing standing around, school’s out, it’s work time!” etc etc… Dead silence in the serving area. I think a few people wet themselves. We go back into the kitchen, Chef follows us in and laughs, saying “Thanks guys.” We had to try hard not to laugh too loudly to ruin the moment. 😀

Tomorrow I am sous-chef. Eek. All I can do is try to do better than the guy who was sous-chef today, who did everything possible to annoy everyone. He told us that we’re just dragging him down and he’s far better than any of us will ever be (didn’t we just get rid of someone like that?) So today we took great pleasure in watching him fall on his face because of his own screwups. In fact, he was the only one the Chef actually had to yell at because the guy wasn’t listening, and thus doing things wrong. If he’s so much better than we are, why was he the only one holding up service? I wonder who he’s going to blame that one on… Ironically enough, this guy knew about the schedule change on Wednesday, but chose not to tell anyone because he considered that to be “babying” us, which is not his responsibility. So much for backing each other up.

As far as Miss Selfish goes, her new group hates her, and I think today she was told in no uncertain terms what they thought of her “I have to be true to myself” bullshit. I was taking trash out at the end of service and saw her hiding behind the ice machine crying. I have to applaud them on that one, as we were never able to get through to her like that.
