So who is this guy?

I noticed that my blog is being linked from other blogs now. I wasn’t expecting that, but since it’s happening, I guess I should give some info about myself.

My name is Glenn, and I’m 37 years old. I have worked in computers for about 20 years, originally doing repairs and configurations. I also have worked for Gateway 2000 and NEC Computers, gradually working my way into software development. Unfortunately, tech being what it was, I got laid off from GenRad after they got bought out by Teradyne, so I went out on my own, running my own service company for three years.

For a couple years now, I’ve seriously been thinking about making a career out of cooking. I could either work my way up by getting a job in a kitchen, probably starting out washing dishes and peeling veggies. Problem was, as soon as a potential employer saw my background, they decided I wasn’t serious about it and didn’t even consider me. I guess they figured, if some tech job would open up and I was qualified for it, I’d quit the cooking job. So I started looking into culinary schools – nothing says “I’m serious about this” like an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts. Based on what I was reading on various message boards like Chef2Chef, the top schools were CIA, Johnson and Wales, and New England Culinary Institute. NECI is in Vermont, which is two hours from my home. Atlantic Culinary, while closer to my home, didn’t get very high ratings. NECI offers an intense two year program, which includes two internships – the other schools make you wait until the end of the program for the internship. So, I decided to attend NECI, and while it is tough in spots, I am happy that I was able to go.
