Rhymes with Duck

So this past weekend was kinda sucky… first, a doctor appointment on Friday to find out why I hurt so bad all the time. Originally the doctor suspected ortho-arthritis in my knees, but now he says it’s in my lower back, which can often cause pain in the knees. I’m on new meds for it, but it’ll take a while for them to kick in and he may have to fiddle with the dosage a few times before it helps. Whee…

Then on Saturday night I tried to do laundry, but the washer wouldn’t work. No water. Checked the laundry sink next to it, no water there either. Shower works though, which is on the same feed, so it has to be a frozen line inside the wall. Lovely. Well, it has been in the single digits for the last few days, not really all that surprising. When we had the laundry center put in, the plumber ran flexible plastic tubing, which is not prone to bursting when it freezes, so that was a bit of a relief, but it took an hour of running a hair dryer into the ceiling to defrost the lines. Once water was working again I turned on the washer, only to hear water splashing everywhere half an hour later. Turns out the drainage pipe was frozen someplace and now I had water all over the floor. There was just no way to get a hair dryer aimed where it needed to be to clear that clog, so Paula and I took turns standing at the washer holding an old vacuum cleaner hose to the drain tube, letting the water drain into the bathtub across the hall. After some Googling, we tried dumping windshield washer fluid down the drain pipe, which eventually did clear the ice. What started out as “lemme wash some clothes for work tomorrow real quick” turned into a three hour project.

And then Sunday, dinner rush at work was what one would call a cluster. We have one particular driver who is not only rather obese, but is apparently kinda slow mentally and makes a lot of dumb mistakes. Last night, his carelessness seemed to be contagious – drivers were taking wrong orders, forgetting side salads, and getting stuck in snow drifts and driveways. As a result, customers were calling complaining about missing items and orders that were delivered two hours late and very cold. At one point the guy who runs the kitchen had to take a delivery himself, leaving me in charge – me on grill and one other guy on pizza. And just as the pizza line guy predicted, that’s when we got slammed hard with non-stop business. For a Sunday it was rather nuts, but considering it had snowed all night and there were two playoff games on television, it wasn’t unexpected. Two hours later the smoke cleared, but it left me kinda demoralized when I saw just how many orders had to be redone because of driver screwups. At least today I don’t go in until 5 so I have some time to sit and relax.
