My good deed for the week...

I came in this morning for my shift at the bus station and was told that there was a kid here waiting for a ticket to be called in. From talking to him, I found out that he worked with a roaming magazine sales group, and had decided he had enough and was going home to St Louis. So his boss said he’d buy a ticket for him, all he had to do was pick it up here. The kid ended up sleeping outside in the bus stop, no money to even eat.

Throughout the day he would call his mother collect to find out what was going on with his ticket. His mother would then call his boss, who was still sleeping, or wasn’t home, or something. The kid started to worry about being stranded, because his boss might have been upset about the sudden departure.

Two buses came and went and still no ticket. Finally the kid got hold of his boss and found out that there was a mixup – his boss thought there was only one bus, and he’d be taking it tomorrow morning. He also didn’t know the kid had nowhere to stay. So, a ticket is forthcoming at least, so he can take the bus that stops here in about 2 hours (and gets him to St Louis some time Tuesday afternoon – ouch!) I gave the kid $10 and said “go eat something, all you had today was Goldfish crackers.” I am now his new personal hero. 🙂 Funny how something so small like that makes people’s day – both theirs and mine.
